About the Riga Shunga Gallery

The shunga tradition — Japan’s art of erotic imagery — stands among the most sophisticated and thought-provoking forms of visual culture. Originating in the Edo period and continuing through Meiji, Taishō, and early Shōwa, shunga intertwined poetic imagination, humor, and human tenderness. Beneath its sensual expression lies a philosophical view of life — one that celebrates impermanence, intimacy, and the quiet beauty of everyday emotion.

Riga Shunga Gallery, a dedicated division of the Riga Gallery of Japanese Art, presents an exceptional collection of more than two hundred works: woodblock prints, preparatory drawings, and unique sketches. Many of them are shown exclusively for study and preservation, forming part of an ongoing research project on Japan’s visual and literary culture of intimacy.

A curated selection is available for collectors and institutions. Each piece is carefully catalogued with attention to authenticity, period, and artistic context. Safe and tracked shipping from Latvia (Riga Gallery of Japanese Art).
